Why TV mounting goes wrong
Most TV mounting accidents happen for one of three reasons: missing the stud, using the wrong anchors, or choosing the wrong wall location. A 65" TV can weigh 80+ lbs — that's not something drywall alone can hold.
Step 1: Find the studs
Use a stud finder and mark both edges of each stud. Studs are typically 16" apart. If you can't find studs where you want the TV, you'll need wall anchors rated for the weight of your TV.
Step 2: Choose the right mount
- Fixed mount — flat against the wall, cheapest, best picture quality
- Tilt mount — adjusts angle up/down, good for high placements
- Full-motion mount — swivels in all directions, heaviest and most complex
Step 3: Height and placement
Eye level while seated is the goal — typically 42–48 inches from floor to center of screen. Going too high (like above a very tall fireplace) causes neck strain.
When to call a professional
- Brick, concrete, or tile walls
- Above a fireplace (heat can damage the TV and wiring is complex)
- You want in-wall cable management
- You're not comfortable drilling or using a level
At FixFox, we mount TVs on any wall type and handle full cable management. Most jobs are done in under an hour.
