Starlink Installation: Roof Mount vs. Ground Mount Explained
How Starlink works
Starlink is a satellite internet service from SpaceX. Your dish needs a clear view of the sky — specifically the northern sky if you're in the US. Obstructions (trees, chimneys, roof peaks) degrade performance significantly.
Use the Starlink app first
Before buying any hardware, download the Starlink app and use the "Check for Obstructions" tool. Point your phone at the sky from different locations on your property. The app shows you exactly how much sky obstruction each spot has.
Roof mount: pros and cons
Pros: Highest elevation = clearest sky view, best signal
Cons: Requires drilling into roof, cable routing into the house, harder access for adjustments
Roof mounting is best for homes with trees or obstructions at ground level.
Ground mount: pros and cons
Pros: No roof drilling, easier installation, easier to reposition
Cons: More vulnerable to obstructions from trees and structures, requires conduit for cable protection
Ground mounting works well if you have a clear yard with a good sky view.
Cable routing
The cable needs to get from the dish to your router. Options:
- Through an existing exterior penetration (dryer vent, A/C line)
- A new small hole drilled through the wall
- Under the eaves and through a soffit
The cable needs protection from weather wherever it's exposed.
Professional installation
FixFox installs Starlink systems throughout Portland and Vancouver. We assess the best mount location, handle all drilling and cable routing, and ensure the system is properly configured before we leave.
