Deck Staining in the Pacific Northwest: Timing and Products That Work
Why the Pacific Northwest is hard on decks
Portland and Vancouver average 150+ rainy days per year. That moisture constantly cycles into and out of wood, causing it to expand, contract, crack, and eventually rot. Without proper staining, an untreated deck in this climate starts showing wear within 1–2 years.
Best time to stain a deck in Portland/Vancouver
Late summer (August–September) is ideal. You need:
- 3+ consecutive dry days before staining (so the wood is dry)
- At least 48 hours of dry weather after staining (for the product to cure)
- Temperatures between 50–90°F
This window is reliable in our region from mid-July through October.
Solid stain vs. semi-transparent stain
Solid stain covers like paint — hides the wood grain, very long-lasting (4–6 years), best for older weathered wood.
Semi-transparent stain shows the wood grain — beautiful on new or good-condition wood, needs reapplication every 2–3 years.
Products that work in wet climates
For the Pacific Northwest, look for stains specifically labeled for high-moisture environments. Water-based acrylic stains have improved significantly and clean up easily. Oil-based penetrating stains offer deeper protection but require longer dry times.
Prep is everything
The biggest mistake homeowners make is staining over a dirty or wet deck. The stain won't bond properly and will peel within a season.
Proper prep: pressure wash, let dry completely (2–3 days in summer), sand rough spots, apply stain.
FixFox handles deck cleaning, prep, and staining for Portland and Vancouver homeowners. We source and apply the stain — you just choose the color.
